Work Flow Checklist for Digital Photographers

Below is a checklist for all of you digital photographers who want to be efficient and save time all in one.

Let us know what you think about the list or if you would add anything to the list in our comments below.

Work Flow Checklist for Digital Photographers

Paste this checklist next to your computer. Refer to it until these steps become automatic. If you do, you’ll save yourself extra effort and dodge the occasional disaster.

1. Capture images.

2. Transfer and save images. Save them as soon as possible to a computer, external hard drive, or CD. Always back up all your photos in their original format.

3. Edit your images. Rank them and toss out the losers. Editing frees the computer’s memory—and your time, ultimately. Image management programs create thumbnails of images and permit scrolling through them for rapid review (You can zoom in when you want to check for clarity.). Map out your naming and filing system first, then create appropriate folders in the image management software before naming and sorting your files.

4. Convert from RAW. If you shoot RAW files, perform as much color and contrast control as possible in the RAW editor.

5. Rotate and crop. Doing this now makes for easier manipulation later. Use the crop tool in Photoshop to remove any distracting elements that intrude along the edges of the image. Cropping is also useful if you find a vertical composition hiding in your horizontal image. Cropping can also extend the range of your telephoto lens—you can reduce the size of the frame in the computer to get a tighter telephoto. If the horizon looks tilted in a photo, you can straighten it in Photoshop by selecting Rotate Canvas from the Image menu.

6. Resize up. When the original file is not large enough for a given end use, increase the size of the file now. You can inflate the image to the desired size either with tools in Photoshop or with plug-ins. To make the image smaller (for example, for the Web), wait until you’ve completed the other corrections so you can keep a larger corrected file as an archival copy.

7. Correct color and contrast. Photoshop and most other editing programs provide for automated color and contrast correction. If you’d like to do your own custom correction, Photoshop bristles with options and parallel ways to achieve similar results. Wander through the menu as an experiment; as long as you have an archived copy of the image, you have nothing to fear. The Undo command is the most powerful tool in Photoshop.

8. Repair. Photoshop and other programs offer multiple ways to remove flaws—such as signs of dust, glare, moire patterns and other artifacts—from an image. Sensor dust and glare on the subject as common problems with easy fixes. For small flaws, try the Clone tool or the Healing Brush, both found in the Tool menu.

9. Enhance. If you wish to improve on reality, do it now. You can change the color of a tent. Remove a distracting log. Turn color images into warm sepia duotones or dramatic infrareds. Paste in a new sky. Add motion streaks to a running animal.

10. Save working file. Save the results now—in 16-bit, if possible—before you sharpen. Sharpening cannot be undone after the file is saved. Retaining an archival copy may prove vital.

11. Sharpen. The more you work on an image, the softer it becomes, so sharpening should be the last thing you do. Additionally, you never want to sharpen more than once because artifacts will multiply. Too much sharpening, and your photo will look harsh and grainy; contrast and noise will seem to increase. Don’t bother trying to sharpen low-resolution images. They are inherently highly pixelated, and even modest sharpening will highlight the individual pixels.

12. Save Archival File. Copy the file to a folder in your image-management system. This is your archival copy. Toss the working copy if you wish.

13. File Output. For putting images on the Web or sending via email, convert your images of 72 dots-per-inch (dpi) JPEGs set at low or medium quality. This way your images will be quick to load. To print photos, feed your printer 300 dpi files for best results. This keeps the file size down without loss of apparent quality.

Have you ever gone to a photoshoot... had didn't know what to wear? Well Here are a few little tips:

~ Session Styling Tips ~

One of the most important rules is: Everybody has a unique style. Make sure you show it off! There are, however, a couple general ‘rules’ and suggestions.

~ Engagements ~

What is the overall style you are looking for in your pictures? ex: formal, casual, country/rustic, modern, etc. This will help you in your clothing selection. A few suggestions that apply to all categories/styles of engagements:

§ Don't get too busy. -If one of you is wearing a bold pattern or color, try to have the other dress in a solid, more simple pattern that’s complimentary to the more boldly dressed person.

§ Watch for lengths. -It’s really not that good looking to have one person in shorts and the other in pants, or one in a short sleeved shirt and the other in long sleeves.

§ Match your jeans. -If wearing jeans, make sure the two jean colors go well together, for example, jeans with a really blue tone aren’t going to look good next to jeans with a more grayish tone, etc.

§ Outfit Changes. -Remember outfit changes are timely, but if you want to get a few formal shots in dress clothes, as well as some casual shots, go ahead and bring both outfits to the shoot.

§ Things to know about Stripes: -remember that in general, horizontal stripes make you look wider, and vertical stripes make you look longer- it’s very emphasized in photographs so be careful!

§ Things to know about white and black: -white can wash you out if you have lighter skin. black and dark colors are slimming.

A fun outfit selection idea:

A casual to semi-formal dress with heels for the girl, and a button-up shirt with a plain- no patterned solid tie, loosely done, with either casual black (or brown) pants or nice dark jeans for the guy. freshen it up for the current season by adding seasonal colors in the dress, jewelry, and guy’s shirt! (or use your wedding colors if that’s preferred!)

Remember hairspray, lipstick/gloss, and of course bottled water!

~ Bridals ~

Girls- this is your time to shine! trust me, your parents and your groom are going to be obsessed with these pictures! here’s are a few suggestions:

§ Feet! -I am going to get pictures of your feet and shoes! just plan on it- i love these shots! so prepare for them by getting a full pedicure if your feet are exposed at all. also bring shoes that you want to be photographed in. too often, brides don’t think their shoes will be seen so they slip on whatever. have fun with your shoes- they don’t have to be your wedding ones. if you’re a passionate runner- show your personality and wear your cutest running shoes!

§ Hands! -I’m going to get pictures of your hand, ring, bouquet (highly recommended), and jewelry. prepare by getting a full manicure (you don’t have to get artificial nails if you don’t want obviously, but at least get them all cleaned up!) get your ring and jewelry cleaned and don’t forget your bouquet if you want one in your pictures.

§ Hair & Makeup! -you most likely put a lot of thought and money into your dress- do yourself a huge favor and get your hair and makeup professionally done. although most girls do a great job on their own everyday hair and makeup, professionals know tricks about looking better in a photo shoot that are extremely helpful!!

§ Bring a friend or mom -they can help hold things and straighten out your dress/train. plus, having them there with you might help you feel more relaxed.

Also Bring: hairspray, bobby pins, and lipstick/gloss for touch-ups. and definitely don’t forget bottled water!

Remember, you will be getting several pictures of you on your wedding day too, so have fun and mix it up with your bridals if you want! A fun way to mix it up in your bridals is wearing different shoes that show your personality, different jewelry (maybe choose bold jewelry in your wedding colors or something fun) and different hairstyles (no veil with a cool headband instead, all down and relaxed curls instead of an up-do, etc.) bridals are all about the bride, so why not show off your personality a little more in these photographs?

Provo Photography Photoshop Tip: Actions!

Sometimes we get asked, "How do you find time to go out to dinner, go to the movies, and hang out with friends when you have pictures at home that need to be edited?" The answer to this is very simple: "Photoshop Actions!"

Actions are a great tool and a wonderful time saver! How often do you find yourself doing the same steps in photoshop on each of your pictures? There is no need to waste all your time sitting behind the computer doing those same steps over and over again!

Photoshop Actions are a series of recorded steps that you record yourself doing edits to an image. It is then saved in your "actions" folder. The next time you want to apply this effect to an image or multiple images, all you have to do is press play! The action will apply the effects you did to the original image to as many images as you want! It's awesome! It saves you lots of time, and very easy to do.

So while the computer is doing all the work... you get to go play tennis, go to a movie, or hang out with your family! :)

These are great! If you have a whole folder of images that need to be resized and saved as JPG... make an action! If you need to enhance the color in all of your images... make an action!

You can even find free actions that others have made online and save them on your computer.

Well guys, I (Jenni) have some great news to share! I have decided to work full time for our photography company, Silverstrand Photography. We have so much fun taking pictures here in the Provo area. Silverstrand is just getting more and more busy, and we are loving it! Jared will still be doing photo shoots as well, just not when he is at work of course.

To celebrate this monumental time in my life, I thought we needed to do something fun. Well in our family, fun means: COMPETITION! Nothing gets the blood pumping like a little friendly competition, eh?

Jared and I had the opportunity to attend a few seminars that Kenneth Linge offers at his studio in Orem, UT. The most recent being Kenneth's Photographing People Part II. We have learned a lot from him. Jared and I took the pictures below during the class. All of them were taken in a parking lot in Orem, with cars every where! Yes a parking lot! It's amazing the kind of images you can get without a fancy studio or needing to travel very far. Some of them were taken at sunset...and some after the sun went down. There is no excuse if the sun went down or if there's not a pretty place to take pictures! :) You can still produce great images!

Here is an example of a Photoshop technique that I like to call "Color SNAP". I love photography, obviously... and I also love scrapbooking. I believe my skills in scrapbooking have been pushed to new heights since I have started using things I've learned in Photoshop on my images. Instead of just using my images right out of camera I like to give them a little "Color SNAP".

If you want to try this on your own... you must first realize there are MANY ways to do this in Photoshop. This is just one way to get this effect.

Open the image in Photoshop
Open the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer
Slide the saturation "slider" to the right. (Not TOOO much though) You still want the skin to look natural.
Open the Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer
Slide the Contrast "slider" to the right. (again...don't over do it)

And there you go...

This will cause the image to jump off the page. Below is an example I did for you. Notice that the before image now looks a little hazy or fogy...when you originally may have thought it looked fine. The second image has a lot more POP!

Our new toy... :) The Epson P-3000. We LOVE it! It is so amazing! While we are on a photo-shoot, we can upload the images to our Epson to verify the RAW images and make sure what we want in focus is in focus before we even go back home. It's wonderful!

Best Buds - Provo Kids Photography

Last weekend we had a great time here in Provo at the park with Ty & Gabe! We spent an hour playing on the slides, blowing bubbles, hiding in the trees, and playing a little soccer. They were fun to play with and had great smiles. They are best buds and cousins and we were able to get some really fun shots of them. Thanks Rachel for helping out!
